| Vancouver Canucks Information |
In a country that has a rich tradition of Hockey; Vancouver Canucks enjoys being one of the most popular NHL teams. The Vancouver Canucks is a professional ice hockey team based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Currently standing at 11th position in NHL Western Conference, the Canucks are considered as one of the most promising teams for upcoming seasons. The team is owned by Canucks Sports and Entertainment and their colors are blue, green and white. They play their home games at the 18,630 capacity General Motors Place.
The team’s history dates back to 1911 when Vancouver's first professional hockey team, the Vancouver Millionaires, played for the Stanley Cup five times. The team won the prized trophy in 1915. The city was also home to one of the first artificial ice arenas in North America. The Millionaires disbanded in 1924, but Vancouver continued to play as a top minor league city for many years.
In 1945 the Pacific Coast Hockey League established an ice hockey franchise in the city of Vancouver. Known as the Canucks, they immediately enjoyed success by winning PCHL championships in their first (1946) and third (1948) year of existence. In 1952, the PCHL merged with the Western Canada Senior Hockey League to form the professional Western Hockey League.
When NHL announced plans to expand to six additional markets in 1967, the owner of the Western Hockey League’s Canucks, Fred Hume, announced that the city of Vancouver would apply for it. However, the presentation to the NHL's Board of Governors was not prepared well hence, they did not succeed. Despite this, the city of Vancouver broke ground for a modern hockey arena, the Pacific Coliseum, in 1967. Built on the grounds of the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), the Coliseum was to be the first home for a prospective Vancouver NHL team. Meanwhile, the Canucks continued to play and won the President's/Lester Patrick Cup in 1958, 1960, 1969, and 1970. The team played at the Vancouver Forum.
Three years later, another Vancouver group made a new presentation, and was awarded an expansion franchise for the price of six million dollars. The new ownership group purchased the WHL Canucks, and joined the league along with the Buffalo Sabres for the 1970-71 season.
Orland Kurtenbach was the Canucks' first-ever captain. The team played its inaugural game on October 9, 1970. Barry Wilkins scored the first goal in franchise history in this match against the Los Angeles Kings. Just two days later, the team netted its first win by defeating Toronto Maple Leafs by 5-3.
Vancouver was placed in the powerful East Division for its first four seasons. It failed to make the playoffs during early years, but it had some very capable players such as Kurtenbach, defencemen Dale Tallon and Jocelyn Guevremont, and winger Dennis Ververgaert.
In 1974, the Canucks were placed in the new Smythe Division and they responded with their first winning record, finishing first in the division. They posted a winning record in 1975 and made the playoffs. However, in coming seasons, the Canucks missed many playoffs. The highlight players of these years included slick playmaker Andre Boudrias, forward Don Lever, and Dennis Kearns who is a top-scoring defenceman in franchise history till yet.
The Canucks made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1982 for the first time in franchise history. They also became the first team from Western Canada to play for the Stanley Cup in 56 years. However, they were defeated by defending champion New York Islanders. The following years saw a rough patch in team’s history as they had to face many defeats one after the other. However, the team spirit never died and the Canucks rose to prominence in early 1990s. In 1992 and 1993, the Canucks won two consecutive regular-season division titles.
The Canucks’ second trip to Stanley Cup final was in 1994 when they lost to New York Rangers. Vancouver, however, continued to be a force for the next two seasons. Expectations were high as the team would soon move into its new arena, General Motors Place. But continuous replacements and wrong trade decisions led the team to many defeats in the coming years. The worst season of the decade was 1998-99.
The Canucks entered the 1990’s with low expectations. It continued the bad run throughout the decade. However, the team returned to the playoffs in 2001 and the Canucks won the Northwest Division two times in a new Millennium. The team had a good run in 2007 and now with strong administration, some good prospects, and a game breaking goaltender, the team is looking positive for the upcoming seasons.
